How Far Would You Go to Find Your Child's Lost Dog?

Weird but true, Pets

labrador

What would you do to get your family's dog back? Photo: sxc.hu

On July 4, the Baltesz family dog, a black Lab named Simon, ran away from home. Thus far they've had no luck locating him. So they did what any dog lover would do. They decided to spray their own urine around the neighborhood in the hopes that the beloved pet will sniff out the trail.

As they say in England -- are you mad, woman?

Mom Louise Baltesz told the UK's Bristol Evening Post, "I know it sounds bizarre and I'm embarrassed to mention it but it makes sense if you think about it."

Not to be crude, but how does it make sense? Is the dog is used to sniffing the family tinkle?

Well, dogs do drink out of the toilet. And with that extra-strength canine sense of smell, perhaps the pup retained the memory of the Baltesz's...unique scent.

In many cities, there are laws regarding where dogs can and cannot do their business; the same goes for their owners. PoopReport.com has a story about a man named David McDonald who was arrested for peeing in a Berkeley parking lot, for example. Despite the fact that public urination was not explicitly against the law in the California town, a judge found that "public peeing is not only a nuisance, it is also littering," according to the site.

So how would an officer of the law handle the Baltesz situation? Isn't pouring your own watery waste product onto the base of a lamppost considered littering? It's certainly gross. Perhaps the laws in England are less strict about such things. It is, after all, the land of the rebel rock stars.

How far would you go to find your child's lost dog?

Pregnant By Swimming?

In the news, Weird but true

swimming pool

Did a teenager get pregnant from swimming in a hotel pool? Photo: sxc.hu

The pool can be a dangerous place: Kids can get sunburned or slip on the wet deck. But can the pool get you pregnant?

Magdalena Kwiatkowska of Poland thinks you can. She is suing an Egyptian hotel because she claims her 13-year-old daughter became impregnated after swimming in its pool during their recent holiday. Ms.Kwiatkowska says that there must have been errant sperm floating around just waiting to implant themselves in an unsuspecting female taking a dip. She swears that her daughter did not meet any boys during their vacation, so the mysterious sperm in the pool had to be the culprit.

Surely this lawsuit will be thrown out of court on inconceivable (pun intended) grounds. First off, wouldn't the chlorine kill any random sperm? But even further, did Ms. Kwiatkowska follow every moment of her vacationing daughter to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she spent absolutely no time with anyone of the opposite sex during their Egyptian holiday?

The only reassuring thing about this story, perhaps, is that frivolous lawsuits are not exclusively an American thing.

Are Co-Ed Dorm Rooms a Good Idea?

Boys and girls living together! Oh my! Photo: sxc.hu

When classes begin at the University of Chicago next semester, the school will take a giant step forward in shedding its ultra-conservative image. For the first time in its 117-year history, the private university will begin allowing undergraduate boys and girls to live together in co-ed dorm rooms.

In the past, the school had a few co-ed floors and bathrooms, but members of the opposite sex were prohibited from rooming together. But when advocates for trans-gender students requested gender-neutral housing in order to accommodate those who feel uncomfortable rooming with members of the same sex, the school began debating their long-standing policy of keeping the boys and girls separate.

After a successful pilot program last semester, the new policy was given the go-ahead and will apply to everyone except freshmen, who will still be assigned same-sex roommates.

Sean Duffy Announces Run for Congress

Rachel Campos-Duffy and Sean Duffy

The Duffy family gears up for a run for Congress. Photo: www.duffyforcongress.com.

Sean Duffy -- husband of ParentDish columnist Rachel Campos-Duffy -- has announced his intention to run for office in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District. Duffy, 37, was appointed Ashland County District Attorney in 2002. He and Rachel, also 37, have five children -- Evita, 9, Jack, 7, Lucía-Belén, 5, John-Paul, 3, and Paloma, 1.

Rachel Campos-Duffy spoke to ParentDish about her husband's decision to run for public office, and about what it will mean to their family and their children. "This is a real education for [the kids]," she says. In fact, she tells us, concerns about their children's future were a driving force in her husband's decision to run for office. "The feeling that all this debt is going to get passed on to our kids is the reason he got involved. It isn't fair to our kids to borrow this money and leave it for [them] to pay back," she says.

But while a commitment to his children are a focal point of Duffy's campaign, Rachel says that the decision to run was "very complicated" specifically because of their concerns about the kids. Their children, she says, were "both the reason why he got in and the reason that gave us the most pause." The Duffys are trying to make campaigning a family affair as much as possible, for several reasons. Rachel says that her older chidren are intrested in politics and are excited about their father running for office, and she is aware that this is a unique opportunity for them. She is also aware that the work of campaigning for public office will take Sean Duffy away from his family a great deal, and she wants them to have every opportunity to be together, even if that time is in the car on the way to an event.

And at least for now, though, the kids are loving it. "The idea of a parade or a dairy breakfast or any event seems fun to them," she says. Then she adds, laughing, "They may hate it at the end but right now it seems appealing."

Of her husband and his choice to run for office, Rachel says, "I am really proud of him. I think he's really stepping outside of himself. He's a very humble person; he's not taking this lightly. He is confident in himself but he understands what he's taking on." We look forward to hearing more about the Duffy family's journey in Rachel's View from the Home Front columns -- and for more information about Sean Duffy's Congressional campaign, you can visit his web site.

Teen Auctions Mom's Naked Photos

Just for moms, Teens & tweens

Teen exposes his mom to the Internet. Image: sxc.hu

When 18-year-old Michael was told to clean out the family garage and sell what he could, he probably never dreamed that would be his entry into the world of soft-core pornography. But that is exactly what happened when the New Zealand boy's rummaging turned up a stash of old photos featuring his mother in her birthday suit.

He went straight to the Internet with his find and offered them up to the highest bidder at an online auction site called Trade Me. In an ad that read, "If you're going to make someone clean up your crap you might want to go through it first," Michael set the starting bid at $5 and offered to throw in a frame for free.

"I did it a bit sneakily but she found out. At first she was was pretty shocked, but then she went along with it. I just wanted a bit of extra cash, we're not rich or anything," he says.

The "five naked photos of my Mum" listing was quickly pulled by the auction site but Michael was not deterred. He then tried to auction some "glamour" shots of his mom, including one in which she is wearing nothing but her underwear and a smile.

Surprisingly, his mom was okay with the public sale of her risque photos. "I insisted Michael show me first, the little bugger. They are quite artistic. There is nothing dodgy about them," 44 year-old Jennifer says.

The auction site, however, was not okay with the photos. Much to Jennifer's disappointment, the site pulled the listing due to fears of becoming known as the "place where people list photos of their mums in their underwear."

"I wanted 50 per cent of the sale, but more than that I miss the nice comments," she says.

Evian's Roller-Skating Babies Ad - Cute or Creepy?

Confession: I'm not a fan of commercials that feature talking babies (think: E*TRADE) -- they freak me out, honestly. But I have to admit that Evian's roller-skating babies ad got to me. It also got to more than four million people on YouTube in the past week, which is impressive.

The video -- of 96 computer-animated infants roller-skating to a remix of the Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight -- is mesmerizing. Something about babies in diapers and onesies doing sophisticated skate tricks and break-dancing moves just makes me smile. And yes, there's an element of creepy about these babies (that first one, leaning up against the boom box, is particularly weird to me), but it's hard to deny that the ad is eye-catching and, frankly, fun to watch.

Michael Aiden, Evian's worldwide brand manager, says that the company returned to the more fantasy-style ad because, "consumers expect more from a big brand..." And while we're impressed with the fancy water company's initiative, we think the real kudos should go to Evian's ad agency, BETC Euro RSCG, for coming up with the one-minute clip.

So is the ad cute or creepy? We polled people in our office, and they were split pretty much down the middle, although commenters at YouTube overwhelmingly find it cute. What do you think?
